Austin Council Approves Trail Of Lights Contract Extension

The Austin City Council was in early holiday spirits Thursday after extended the RunTex Foundation's contract to run the Trail of Lights at Zilker Park for five more years.

Last year's December holiday event was deemed a success with huge crowds reaching Austin City Limit Festival numbers.

But before that the Trail of Lights has been dimmed and dark for three consecutive years due to funding shortfalls.

Paul Carrozza of the RunTex Foundation brought it back in its traditional form -- an eight-night, family-friendly lighted trail at no cost to the citizens, but with some enhancements, including a 5K run.

The Trail of Lights has been an Austin tradition since its creation in 1965, when it was titled "Yule Fest." It was renamed Trail of Lights in 1992.
