Texas Battleship Is Getting a Makeover
A 99 year old battleship is getting a multi-million dollar makeover, so that it can forever be admired by history buffs.
The U.S.S Texas was used in two world wars, and has not had any major repairs in 20 years.
“They need to renovate it and keep history alive,” says Cristal Bostain, who brought her children to the dock, so they could see history up close and personal, and not have to read about it in a book.
Next month, Texas Parks and Wildlife contractors will start repairing the battleship, while it remains on display and open to the public at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. The project is expected to cost about $17.5 million, and it will come from a 2008 bond approved by Texas voters.
Officials say the ship will still be open to visitors; most of the repairs will be done below decks, where the public is not allowed.
