West Austin Residents Say FM 2222 Too Dangerous

The gruesome wreckage of the fatal accident that took place on Sunday demonstrates how dangerous FM 2222 can be.

Julie Stewart said there is a lot of traffic on the highway, and the road is filled with hills and curves that can be a recipe for disaster. She said wrecks happen too often near her neighborhood, so she is moving.

Stewart said her biggest frustration is people not obeying the speed limit. She wants to see more patrol cars out enforcing.

"People have got to slow it down," Stewart said. "I even joked with a cop out here one day, I said, 'Do you give drugs to people before they get on this road?'"

According to the Austin Police Department, since January 1, 2013 there have been 26 crashes between 360 and 620. APD says those can be anything from a small fender bender to a major injury crash.

Vincent Merriman experiences this danger almost every day. For the last four years, he's worked for a local company holding signs by the side of the road. He said he is worried he could be the next to have an accident.

"It does affect everyone. There are a lot of school buses," Merriman said. "There needs to be some sort of standard, some sort of precaution for the community."
