Officer: State Rep. Gonzalez Double Legal Limit After Austin Crash
A Texas state representative was twice over the legal alcohol limit when she crashed her car early Thursday morning, according to an arrest affidavit.
Rep. Naomi Gonzalez, D-El Paso is charged with driving while intoxicated.
Police say Gonzalez was driving a BMW sedan when she rear-ended a Fiat sedan at Congress Avenue and Barton Springs Road. The collision caused the Fiat to hit a cyclist directly in front.
Gonzalez went to the hospital and an Austin police officer interviewed her.
The affidavit said the officer noticed Gonzalez had a strong smell of alcohol and her eyes were bloodshot and glassy.
She told him she began drinking at midnight having two drinks – a beer and cocktail, according to the affidavit.
Gonzalez took a blood alcohol test and it registered .16, the affidavit said. The legal limit is .08.
According to the affidavit, the officer noted that Gonzalez did not ask how the other people involved in the crash were doing, "…but she cried about how she had worked so hard to get where she was."
The other driver was not hurt. The cyclist went to the hospital but was not seriously injured.
