Austin-Travis County EMS Busy For SXSW

Austin-Travis County EMS medics have had a busy week for South by Southwest -- on Thursday night alone they responded to 35 incidents downtown.

ATCEMS says that from 3 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. the next day 20 people were transported from downtown to local hospitals.

They say Thursday evening was the second night medics had an increased presence in the downtown area for the festival.

Most of the 35 incidents reported downtown were minor. They included simple traumatic injuries, alcohol-related complaints and diabetic complaints, according to ATCEMS.

"An increased EMS presence is important during large events such as SXSW. It is important because we strive to keep our response times short. A normal response time to the downtown area might be three to four minutes, increased coverage and presence could help us get there in seconds," James Hawley, ATCEMS Division Chief, said.

One of the incidents included 58-uear-old woman struck by a bicycle and knocked down at Congress Ave and 5th Street. She suffered a head injury and was unconscious when she was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge. Her current condition is unknown.
